But once it gets a few years out of date, it starts to look like the business owner doesn't care about the website enough to keep it up to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, I've been building a fair few <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/intelliwolf.com\/recommends\/divi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Divi websites<\/a>. They don't natively handle the automatically updating year in the footer very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nor do they natively allow shortcodes in the Theme Customizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I was figuring it out, I came across a number of ways people have tried to do it. They do fancy shortcodes, with extra plugins, or custom JavaScript.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of those things works with WordPress as it should be. This is a really simple thing to do, it shouldn't be that hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And because I'm using some of this on WordPress Multisites, I needed it to be easy to roll out and work across the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I dug into the code and this is what I came up with...<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to add automatically updating current year to Divi footer<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/intelliwolf.com\/create-wordpress-child-theme\/\" target=\"_blank\">Switch to a child theme<\/a>, if you haven't already<\/li><li><a href=\"#add-to-child-theme\">Copy<\/a> the <em>et_get_footer_credits()<\/em> function from Divi -> <em>functions.php<\/em> into <em>functions.php<\/em> of your child theme<\/li><li><a href=\"#edit-footercredits\">Edit<\/a> <em>$footer_credits<\/em> to add the current year.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There's a download for a pre-built, basic Divi child theme on the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/intelliwolf.com\/create-wordpress-child-theme\/#download-child-themes\" target=\"_blank\">child theme tutorial<\/a> if you want to get started quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"add-to-child-theme\">Add et_get_footer_credits() to your child theme<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can either grab the <em>et_get_footer_credits()<\/em> function from the <em>functions.php<\/em> file in Divi, or just copy what I've got below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The default for this function is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>function et_get_footer_credits() {\n  $original_footer_credits = et_get_original_footer_credits();\n\n  $disable_custom_credits = et_get_option( 'disable_custom_footer_credits', false );\n\n  if ( $disable_custom_credits ) {\n {\n    return et_get_safe_localization( sprintf( $credits_format, $original_footer_credits, 'p' ) );\n  }\n\n  return et_get_safe_localization( sprintf( $credits_format, $footer_credits, 'div' ) );\n}<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The line we care about is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>$footer_credits = et_get_option( 'custom_footer_credits', '' );<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>That line pulls in the text from the Footer Credits in the Theme Customizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get to the text, in the admin area go to <em>Divi -> Theme Customizer<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With the default code, it will literally put whatever you have in that box into your footer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The php code to insert the current year, automatically updated when the year changes, is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>date_i18n('Y')<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"edit-footercredits\">Edit $footer_credits to add the current year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a lot of extra code in the <em>et_get_footer_credits()<\/em> function that you won't need. It handles if you check the \"Disable Footer Credits\" box or leave the Footer  Credits box empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the sake of consistency, I usually leave the rest of the code in the function and just edit this line:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>$footer_credits = et_get_option( 'custom_footer_credits', '' );<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>To this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>$footer_credits = \"Copyright &amp;copy; \" . date_i18n('Y') . \" \" . et_get_option( 'custom_footer_credits', '' );<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>That produces Copyright \u00a9 2020, followed by whatever I put in the Footer Credits box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&amp;copy; is the html symbol for \u00a9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Putting a period in between strings in php joins them together.
